Liminal Symptom is a survival horror game in early development featuring a deep story (not present in demo), a combination of weaponless horror and precarious combat, and levels that change when you die. We are currently looking for funding to make this game a reality!

Note that this gameplay demo is only a short prototype with a semi-randomized combat section followed by a horror section. This demo does not accurately reflect the full game and almost everything will be improved upon!

We are working on a new demo that is set in the first chapter of the story, and better represents the final game in terms of its setting and graphical fidelity.

You can follow the progress of our new demo on Twitter and support us on Patreon, where we post exclusive updates and test builds! If you are interested in more info about us, check our Patreon page!

Story Teaser for the full game:

You are a Mudwalker, a lowly creature born into an underground world and infected by a mysterious inner voice leading you into the dark. The ruins of occult factories whisper but one truth: "A plant is like a mind — it forms a shape, an image."

Technical info:

Controls given in-game. M&KB + controller support. Make sure to use headphones, and turn off film grain if recording videos. The gamma calibration settings might not be accurate for all monitors so turn up the gamma if things seem way too dark.

Thanks for playing, glad you enjoyed it!

Overall a really cool prototype that has well working and smooth fundamentals with a really nice and eerie atmosphere.

Movement felt nice altogether, I didn't get stuck on any random invisible edges or struggle walking over small items on the ground, which was very nice. I did manage to get on top of tables, boxes etc. by stacking items. Maybe something to be wary of since no jumping, could be abused.  I was also able to get inside of a small box and a barrel by crouch walking towards them, only did this once so not fully sure how. While in the barrel I could drag it and move around. Again though, didn't find any way to take advantage of it.

I think adding a slider for ADS sensitivity along the regular sens would be good. I also think the keybinds should just be in English, never seen a tab be called "Sarkain" in keyboards :D, also idk what those are translated from but if the word is huge in some other language it might look silly.

Some people might want a healing animation for immersion, personally I think it's better and sharper without, as there's still a small cooldown on drinking them and the action has a sound. Same with picking up items, no animation just makes it a lot cleaner IMO.

I'm not sure if the prototype was made to reflect the intended difficulty of the game, if not then ignore. I had way too many resources, especially ammo. Was pretty much capped the entire game and kept finding more :D. I'd suggest reducing the amount you get or adding other functions for it, maybe some special moves that cost more, could be for utility (burn some roots, illuminate an area, slow a monster etc.). Hollow knight used one resource for special attacks and healing, that's one way too. Possible utility could later on in development be used to add depth via puzzles / bosses.

I wish the last alien/monster had some sound for breaking doors, I kept closing them and checking back just to see it run after me :'D

As I said before I think overall the prototype is very promising, there's so much room to expand, with other maps and story. I played on RTX3060, Ryzen 5 3600 & 16gb ram and the game ran perfectly, constant 144 with vsync on. Streaming it using streamlabs Game Capture and Screen Capture with "vsync" disabled caused major stutters in the capture, this is obviously rn completely irrelevant but worth noting for later(?idk maybe).

Thank you for the valuable feedback! Glad to hear you liked it!

This game is amazing! The graphics are great, the sound design is awesome and everything is just so creepy and ominous. Such a well made prototype and I can't wait for a full version or even another demo! 100/10

Thanks for playing, so glad you enjoyed it!

this was an interesting game, the title of the game had me expecting something else, but the game was even better then i was thinking it was goin got be. this was really cool, the atmosphere, environment, monsters,  i think it was all well made. keep up the great work!

Glad you enjoyed it, thanks! The title does cause confusion haha.

That was a cool ride. The ambience is very unique and the atmosphere was chilling. Got my heart racing by the end. I can't wait to see more.

My feedback: 1) make objects breakable, such as by throwing (like we see in amnesia games) or using attacks. 2) The sensitivity reduction when aiming is a bit not good. 3) Add an option to choose between hold or toggle crouching. 4) My computer is in portuguese, so the text "space bar" when displayed takes a bit of space and overlays other text.

Everything else that I didn't mention, such as graphics, audio, art direction, is incredible.

Since the levels are randomized, I'm not sure if a whole campaing is one seed (similar to Spooky House of Jumpscares) or if its a more roguelite experience, where you die a lot but get upgrades. I'd like to know more about it so I can know what to expect.

For reference: I have a GTX 1660 Super and an intel i5 10th gen, the game ran at around 250 fps.

Thanks for the valuable feedback! Our plan is to make a linear story-driven experience, so  not a roguelite, but combat sections will be semi-randomized to give replayability and keep the tension if you die!

This was a very fun little experience! I can see this being a full and fun game, the graphics were great and so were the sound effects and music. The weapon was a little slow but was a clear choice to make some enemies a pain, but all around it was really fun! I recommend!

Thanks for playing and giving valuable feedback! We're definitely developing our approach to combat for the full game!

Amnesia & Penumbra it made me feel. Both from Frictional Games. Congratulations. I will keep an eye.

Those are big inspiration for us! Glad you liked it!

I really liked it, I think it has great potential as a prototype.

The only thing I didn't love is the weapon itself, the design, and the feel of it, other than that I think is great! the enemies, the designs are really creepy/grotesque and the final enemy is a really nice change of pace, Great game! I can't wait to see what evolves :D

Thanks for the valuable feedback! Glad to hear you enjoyed it :)

Hello, I played this game and absolutely loved it! Everything about it was amazing and it was genuinely very creepy, the sound effects kept me on edge throughout the game, can't wait for the full game, great job!

Thank you, I'm so glad you enjoyed!

This prototype is amazing! There is something charming about the little wand it makes you feel small and yet powerful, then you guys had to do me in dirty in the second section! I got terrified in that part.

I can't wait for this project to keep expanding and become a fully-fledged release, is going to be fire! I can already see all the right decisions being made in its production.

I am excited to know more about this world and why there are creepy things crawling around it.

Thank you, glad to hear it! We're really excited about taking things forward and fleshing out the story and setting!

I like ur art style!!!!

Thanks!

the game was so badass i love it man keep up the good work

Thanks for playing I'm glad you liked it!

Really cool game. I was not expecting it to get that scary xD

Thanks for trying out, glad you enjoyed it :D

Hi there, I am DragonExplosion and I am a Youtuber. If you like my videos, please leave a like and subscribe at my channel.

This was an interesting horror game involving the main character using a strange magical object to defend himself and using his own stealth abilities to run away from the monsters. It was definitely a great horror experience as the entire mood and atmosphere was quite tense and scary due to the usage of various scary noises throughout the game. Moreover, the use of contrasting environments from pure darkness and foreign territory to bright safe zones really made me wonder as to what the story is actually about and whether stories will be told in the brightly lit spaces.

The combat was a little slow for me as it takes a long time to charge the magical staff while running away from the monster at the same time. Perhaps combat in the game can be improved for more action but if the game is focusing more on the stealth and conservative usage of the weapon while carefully running away from the enemy then I think the game is doing fine. Will be looking forward to more story-telling in the game as I believe that it will be crucial for the game to be an amazing one.

Thank you for reading my comment and I wish you good luck in your future endeavours.

Thank you for the thoughtful feedback! I rebalanced the combat a bit and I agree that story will be our crucial element!

great jobs

Thanks for trying out the demo!
